News/Upcoming Workshops/Tours

Hello!

Hi everyone.

I hope you are all well. Once again, I apologise for my lack of correspondence and the brevity of this issue.  The last 2 years have not been kind to me or my family.

However, I wanted to send out a quick news update re current workshop availability, HardQuiz Battle of the Duds, share some exciting competition results (images and settings), and ask for your support (either by entering or sharing) for a new bird photography competition I have co-founded which closes on:

PS: You have reached the end of this email when you get to a photo of me and my beautiful Dad. I say this because I realised that it cuts off half way in gmail and most people don't realise there is more - you can only see full email by opening it up in a browser.

WILDART

I'm thrilled to be involved with WildArt Bird Photography Awards, an exciting new bird photography competition that encourages photographers to think a little differently and take a more creative approach to their work.

The competition is organised by my good friend Rob Read, who has many years of experience organising major international wildlife photography competitions, and I'm delighted to be joining a fantastic line-up of photographers on the judging panel.

Fabulous Prizes

WildArt is sponsored by Nikon Australia, with an incredible Nikon Z8 and 180–600mm lens combination for the overall winner, alongside a range of other prizes across the competition, including a SPECIAL AWARD for the best AUSTRALIAN bird photo, provided by EggPicnic (Australian designers and birders, Camilla De Gregorio and Christopher Macaluso).

There's also a connection particularly close to home for me. By entering WildArt, you'll be helping to support Western Australia's Black-Cockatoos through Perth NRM, which is raising funds to plant native food species and create more feeding habitat for these wonderful birds.

Entries close on 11 October, so there's not long left if you'd like to take part. If you enjoy approaching bird photography creatively — or have images sitting on your hard drive that don't necessarily fit the mould of a traditional bird photography competition — this could be the perfect home for them.

BLOG

The team at WildArt are keen to not only run a competition that showcases artistic bird photography, but also provide resources and tips on how to have a more creative approach to bird photography. To this end, we have a BLOG with some great articles that you may find helpful and, hopefully, inspiring, including mine titled, 'How the Bloody hell did they do that - Unlock the Creative genie lurking inside'!

Rob and fellow co-founder of WildArtBPA, Josh Galicki, also have an increasingly popular podcast, The Wildlife Photography Podcast, episode 47 of which specifically discusses 'What Makes a Photo Creative'.

Insect Trails

"Shot in beautiful Miriwoong Country (Kununurra, WA), this photograph is a long-exposure study of the frantic, hidden choreography of insects gathered under stadium lights. My goal was to turn these often-overlooked creatures into a piece of abstract art, while also shining a light on the vital importance of insect biomass and the dangers of widespread pesticide overuse."

Lovely to hear from you, Georgina, and thank you for the update — no apologies needed. It sounds like it's been a really tough couple of years, and I hope brighter days are ahead for you and your family.

The WildArt competition sounds fantastic — what a wonderful way to champion a more creative approach to bird photography, and supporting WA's Black-Cockatoos makes it even more special. I've shared it with a few photographer friends and will be sorting through my hard drive before the 11 October deadline!

Best of luck to everyone entering, and take good care of yourself. Looking forward to seeing you back running workshops in 2028. 💛
