Georgina Steytler.jpg

I am a nature photographer with a passion for birds, ethics and conservation.

I'm a country girl at heart. I grew up on an orchard in Donnybrook, a small country town in Western Australia, where I spent hours wandering about the native jarrah and marri bushland developing an enduring love of nature.

For the last fifteen years I have been working on various conservation projects as well as teaching the art and ethics of nature photography through workshops, talks and articles, both in Australia and across the world. The highlight of my work to date has been helping to raise the money to buy a magnificent wetland, home to a mob of endangered Australasian bitterns, on the southern coast of Western Australia (click here to find out more: Eungedup Wetlands).

In November 2021, my first book, titled For the Love of Birds, was published by Australian Geographic. All author profits from this book were donated to conservation.

"Georgina Steytler, one of Australia’s most gifted wildlife photographers, is passionate about birds and conservation. In this stunning collection of her work over the last decade, her poetic images portray birds as individuals, each with a character of its own, an intelligence and beauty to be admired, a mystery to be solved, a skill to be envied and each with a unique, and deserved, place in this world. An ethical artist who believes in treading lightly on the earth, she practices and describes the art of low impact photography which doesn’t distress wildlife or disturb natural behaviours. Georgina’s photographs are created to evoke emotion and imagination. She’s drawn to birds with personality and likes to use the elements, light and landscape around the bird to portray a sense of place, scale, perspective, contrast, mood and mystery. In For the love of birds, you’ll get to know some of Australia’s 830 species of birds in a series of beautiful and powerful images that will reconnect you with our natural world and inspire you to notice the wonderful birds all around us."

My follow up book, For the Love of Flora, was released in October 2023. Part-proceeds from this book will also be donated to conservation.

"Artistically photographed by Georgina Steytler, this book is an enchantment of our native flora, celebrating its beauty and diversity - from the more familiar eucalypts and wattles to carnivorous sundews and secretive orchids."

The purpose of these books is to encourage more Australians to appreciate and love our nature. We are so lucky to live in one of the most unique and biodiverse countries on earth, yet we are squandering these natural assets at a faster rate than ever. Clearing of native vegetation continues at unpredented levels. With every development of virgin bushland approved, another slice of paradise is paved and lost forever. And it will continue as long as the majority of Australians do and say nothing. In the words of Jane Goodall:

"The greatest danger to our future is apathy... We will have to stop depending on someone else to save the world. It is up to us - you and me, all of us."

I currently live in Albany with my husband and a beautiful, if a little demanding, Belgian Shepherd. If you are ever in this part of the world, send me an email and I'll be more than happy to catch up over a  good cup of coffee.

~Photographic Philosopy~

I am a self-taught photographer. Over the years I have tried to master the technical aspects of nature photography, whilst also developing an eye for an aesthetically pleasing composition. My favourite saying is attributed to Pablo Picasso:

"Learn the rules like a Pro. Break them like an Artist."

I also believe that as a nature photographer, I have a duty to do everything in my power to minimise our impact and help conserve our natural world. To find out more about the ethics of nature photography, please visit ETHICS. In this regard, my photographic philosophy can be summed up in these three words:

"Art. Conservation. Ethics."
